Crustal variability along the rifted/sheared East African margin: a review

چکیده
Abstract The East African margin between the Somali Basin in north and Natal south formed as a result of Jurassic/Cretaceous dispersal Gondwana. While initial movements West Gondwana left (oblique) rifted margins behind, subsequent southward drift from 157 Ma onwards created major shear zone, Davie Fracture Zone (DFZ), along Africa. To document structural variability DFZ, several deep seismic lines were acquired off northern Mozambique. profiles clearly indicate changes zone an elevated continental block (14°–20°S) to non-elevated basement covered by up 6-km-thick sediments (9°–13°S). Here, we compile geological/geophysical knowledge five Africa interpret them context one latest kinematic reconstructions. A pre-rift position detached sliver Ridge Tanzania/Kenya southeastern Madagascar fits this reconstruction without general rotation poles.

Crustal evolution in the East African Orogen: a neodymium isotopic perspective
The East African Orogen (EAO) is one of Earth’s great collision zones, where East and West Gondwana collided to form the supercontinent ‘Greater Gondwana’ or ‘Pannotia’ at the end of Neoproterozoic time. There is now sufficient Nd isotopic data for basement rocks of the EAO to yield a useful summary. A total of 449 samples were gleaned from the literature, recalculated to a common value for the...
متن کاملReview of Significant Trade East African Aloes
There are approximately 360 species and subspecies in the succulent plant genus Aloe, distributed in Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and certain islands of the Indian Ocean. In East Africa, as defined for this review there are nearly 200 taxa, many of which are naturally rare and confined to specific habitats. The sap of certain Aloes has medicinal or cosmetic applications and has been traded int...
متن کاملcrustal conductivity structure of a continental margin, from magnetotelluric investigations
the deep internal structure of the crust can be determined using appropriate seismic and electromagnetic methods. the natural source magnetotelluric (mt) method is the most suitable electromagnetic technique for probing into the deep crust. a long period magnetotelluric data set obtained in the southern chilean andes is investigated in this paper. dimensionality analysis shows that the data may...
متن کاملfor a crustal magma reservoir beneath the upper east rift
An anomalous body with low Vp (compressional wave velocity), low Vs (shear wave velocity), and high Vp/Vs anomalies is observed at 8–11 km depth beneath the upper east rift zone of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii by simultaneous inversion of seismic velocity structure and earthquake locations. We interpret this body to be a crustal magma reservoir beneath the volcanic pile, similar to those widely re...
متن کاملSinking Jelly-Carbon Unveils Potential Environmental Variability along a Continental Margin
Particulate matter export fuels benthic ecosystems in continental margins and the deep sea, removing carbon from the upper ocean. Gelatinous zooplankton biomass provides a fast carbon vector that has been poorly studied. Observational data of a large-scale benthic trawling survey from 1994 to 2005 provided a unique opportunity to quantify jelly-carbon along an entire continental margin in the M...
